The ghillie suit was originally developed by Scottish gamekeepers as a portable hunting blind, constructed to reduce the chance of detection and approach pheasants unseen.
It is a camouflage clothing designed to resemble heavy foliage, typically from a net or cloth garment covered in loose strips or burlap, cloth and twine.
Snipers and hunters wear ghillie suits to blend into their surrounding and conceal themselves from enemies or targets. The suit gives the wearer a three dimensional outline that matches the surroundings, and when manufactured correctly, it will move in the wind the same way as the surrounding foliage.
High-quality ghillie suits are made by hand. Military snipers will spend many hours constructing and perfecting their own ghillie suit. At the end of the manufacturing process, the suit is often weathered by dragging it behind a vehicle on a dirt road, and then left in the mud to soak overnight.
During live operations or hunts, the suit is customised with natural foliage in order to blend into the surrounding environments, and must be changed every few hours as the foliage dies, or when moving into different camouflage.
