The Hesco barrier is a modern, lightweight and easily portable cage used for flood control and more commonly military fortification. It is made of wire mesh container and heavy duty fabric liner which provides permanent protection against small arms fire and explosions. It was developed in the late 1980's and has been used extensively in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Assembling the Hesco is easy, and simply involves unfolding and filling it with sand, gravel, rocks or concrete. The reason for its popularity is the quick and easy installation with the use of a front end loader, which saves many many man hours over sandbags.
