Smoke Method:

Angle of smoke / 4

65 / 4

= 16mph - Fresh Wind (16.25)

    Blowing from right to left

Speed Wind Formula:

Range (decimal) x (wind / 4)

.45 x (16 / 4)

.45 x 4

= 1.8mils Right (into the wind)

By observing the smoke in the distance, you agree that the wind is blowing it at an angle of 65 degrees, from the right. You will need to adjust your point of aim into the wind, and therefore right. Using the speed wind formula for your .308 calibre rifle, your solution tells you that you need to adjust 1.8mils right to achieve a point of aim - point of impact. Keep in mind, that in reality the wind speed and direction at your target end will not always be the same at the point of the smoke, nor at the firing end. It is therefore necessary to obtain multiple wind readings.
